This article presents an analysis of the experience on the quality process for the career of “Educación Comercial” at the “Facultad de Ciencias Sociales”, “Escuela de Secretariado Profesional” and of the “Centro de Investigación y Docencia en Educación (CIDE)”, “División de Educología de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica”, with the objective of providing a methodology for the quality search processes among academic departments of the National University of Costa Rica, who have assumed, since its creation, the permanent challenge of training professionals in “Educación Comercial”, trained in the field of Education Sciences and Office Administration. The reader will find in this article an issue related to the outdated carrer of “Eduación Comercial” and a tour of the different stages carried out to achieve the accreditation of this career, emphasizing the participatory methodology to generate excellence in the processes of educational and academic management. The first part of this article describes the background and causes of the problem that allows to understand the current educational context, which requires quality standards. Then the theoretical principles underlying quality management in higher education institutions are analyzed. In the third section, the implemented methodology is presented, characterized by integrating a proactive participation of academic and administrative staff, the student community, graduates and employees, and external peer evaluators. Finally, the analysis of results and conclusions are presented from an evaluation perspective, to obtain academic excellence on universities.
